Being a homeowner comes with what seems like a constant array of expenses. Just when you’ve paid off one major expense, it often seems that another one comes up. Even worse, some meaningful home expenses are things you may not have thought to prepare for. Make sure you aren’t surprised by these common, but manageable home expenses that may pop up over time when you own a home.

Hail Damage

You’ve probably thought about the consequences of storms involving wind and rain, but many homeowners are less likely to have prepared for hail. However, hail can have severe effects on your home, particularly your roof.

While very small pieces of hail for brief periods may not do much damage, hail can be as large as golf balls or even larger and continue for some time. Such hail can have a serious impact on your roof.

If you’re not sure whether your homeowner insurance covers hail, it’s very important to do some research about adding hail damage to roof insurance claims. Otherwise, you may find that you are left handling an expensive bill to have your roof repaired after hail damage on your own dime.

Insect Infestations

Many homeowners don’t think to worry about an insect infestation until they see signs of it, such as termites flying around or beetles carving holes into the siding. However, by this time, the damage may already be done.

It’s a good idea to have your home assessed for insects regularly. This is especially true if your home is older or if you know that it has been infested with insects at some point in the past. Not surprisingly, wooden homes are at a higher risk of infestation than others, but different types of insects can do damage to a wide range of homes.

Floor Treatments

It’s easy to overlook the floor that you walk on every day. However, floors take on a lot of wear and tear and may need treatment before you know it. Tile floors may need to have cracked tiles replaced. Wooden floors need to be oiled and may also need to be sanded.

Failing to treat floors when they need it can cause new problems. Cracked tile floors can allow moisture into the underline base, resulting in rot or mold. Wooden floors that aren’t oiled can dry out and splinter so that they will need to be replaced.
