What’s one thing you can never have too much of in your house? Storage. Whether they are closets, guest rooms, crawlspaces, or even labelled bins for your hats and mittens, it’s usually easy enough to fill them. The trouble is finding affordable solutions to your storage problems because let’s face it, they aren’t always cheap!

If you want to live an organized life yet do it in a way that doesn’t empty your wallet, you’ll want to take note of the following tips:

  • Invest in Longevity

Though it’s tempting to want to store everything in cardboard boxes, the truth is that they easily disintegrate and are not always an ideal solution for keeping your items safe and secure. It’s worth spending a little extra upfront if you know that it translates into long-term value. We’re referring to plastic storage bins with lids, woven baskets, and garment rolling racks that are durable and guaranteed to last for decades. These can be used in all different situations and won’t have to be replaced every few years due to light wear and tear.

  • Consider a Storage Locker

If you are trying to really get maximum value, sometimes it’s worth living in a smaller home and renting a storage unit rather than purchase several hundred (or thousand) square feet of space just to store all of your belongings. If you have many possessions that you don’t use that often yet can’t get rid of, move them out of the house and into a storage locker. It might seem like an extra expense but it means that you could be ultimately be spending less on your rent or your mortgage.

  • Reuse Good Quality Packaging

You don’t need to spend a lot of money buying storage things like boxes, bins, and bags if you save good quality items that you get for free with purchases, etc. Shoe boxes, reusable plastic bags, and dust bags can be repurposed for storage with minor alterations. A little bit of paint or labels can go a long way to making useful storage items. Invest in labels, chalkboard paint and some markers, and now you can turn almost anything into part of your personalized organizational storage system.

  • Junk Removal

This might not seem like a solution to you, however, the less stuff you have, the less of it you have to worry about storing properly. Hiring a junk removal company to pick up a container of waste can be much cheaper than having to rent a storage locker or extra garage to keep you things in. Sometime the inconvenience getting rid of stuff is what keeps us from just dealing with it, so by committing to a junk removal appointment, you are ultimately saving yourself storage related costs.

  • Food Storage

Buying extra food when its on sale and storing it for later consumption can be a smart way to keep your grocery costs low. However, the limiting factor is often that we have no place to store it. Investing in a chest freezer and a supplementary pantry can encourage you to stock up on food sale items when it makes sense to do so. Just be sure to watch those expiry dates!

Spending lot of money on expensive storage solutions just doesn’t make sense to us. Instead, invest in items and techniques that give us a lot of added value without too much of a cost. Remember that avoiding having to store items is the ultimate method of eliminating storage costs, however sometimes it’s something that we can’t, or shouldn’t, do. Sometimes getting a third person objective view on your storage needs is the best way of understanding what needs to get done, and how.
